Christantus Uche Fuels Dominant Crystal Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though entering their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a comfortable win that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct passage to the last 16, especially after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for several Palace's fringe players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their league season were outmatched against a largely rotated Palace outfit. The Londoners were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Control Established from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
